BARIATRIC SURGERY: FOR WHOM?Going by the recommendations of the Spanish Society for the Study of Obesity (SEEN 2000), candidates should meet a series of conditions. The correct selection of the patient and technique used require a multidisciplinary team of experts, integrated with endocrinologists, surgeons, psychiatrists, psychologists, dieticians and specialized nurses. The criteria for pre-surgery actions should include: Clinical history and a physical: with a general study of obesity, investigating associated illnesses. Diet evaluation: an evaluation of nutrition, information on nutritional habits and post-operative behaviour. Complementary tests: general analytics with a hormonal study, an electrocardiogram, x-rays of the thorax, an abdominal ultrasound, a gastrointestinal study and a study of respiratory function. Exhaustive psychiatric and psychological evaluation, after ruling out previous psychopathologies to the surgery and an evaluation of post-operative adaptation to changes.
